Sonsoles is developing solutions for a world that does not exist yet

Vattenfall engineer Sonsoles Jimenez sees innovation as a collaborative process, where different perspectives, disciplines and expertise come together to solve challenges and prepare for the future of offshore wind.

For Sonsoles Jimenez, innovation means thinking beyond today's established solutions. It can of course involve developing new technology, but it is equally about challenging assumptions, connecting different areas of expertise and finding better ways forward. Much of Sonsoles' work focuses on understanding future needs and helping develop solutions that will support the next generation of offshore wind.
“Innovation is about taking the next step. We are developing solutions for a world that does not exist yet and asking how things could be done better. Sometimes that means developing something entirely new. Sometimes it means using existing knowledge in a way nobody has considered before.”
As Product Owner for Foundations at Vattenfall R&D, she helps develop the offshore wind technology of the future. What makes the work meaningful is the opportunity to solve complex engineering problems while contributing to the transition towards a more sustainable energy system. A naval architect and offshore engineer by training, she has worked within offshore wind engineering since 2009. For the past seven years, she has been based at Vattenfall's research and development centre in Älvkarleby. Her role focuses on foundations for offshore wind turbines. She maintains close contact with stakeholders in Vattenfall's wind business, who approach her team with both immediate challenges and longer-term development needs.
“Our work is closely aligned with the business. We support current needs, but we also have a responsibility to look ahead and investigate questions that may become important in the future.”

Innovation doesn't have to be something new
A typical working day may involve analysing data, speaking with colleagues in the wind business or developing methods for a new type of test. When facing challenges that fall outside existing standards or procedures, she develops new approaches to generate the knowledge needed for decision-making. One project may concern how foundations interact with the seabed, while another investigates why a component is wearing out earlier than expected. Curiosity and problem-solving have been consistent drivers throughout her career. Understanding complex systems and finding ways to improve them is both part of who she is and what she believes she contributes to Vattenfall's mission of enabling fossil freedom.
“I have always enjoyed understanding how things work and how they can be improved. Engineering felt like a natural combination of my interests in problem-solving, mathematics, physics and science.”
New ideas from every generation
She sees Vattenfall's dedicated R&D centre as clear evidence that the company takes innovation seriously. Equally important is a working culture in which people are encouraged to contribute ideas, regardless of seniority.
“I do not experience the organisation as particularly hierarchical. Experience is valued, but younger colleagues can bring completely new perspectives and identify something that previous generations have missed. Everyone has a voice.”
Collaboration is also essential when projects encounter difficulties. According to her, solving an unexpected problem together often creates stronger teams than a project in which everything proceeds exactly as planned. “You become close to your colleagues when you work through a challenging problem together and find a solution. Problem-solving as a team is a great feeling and often creates opportunities for innovation as well."
For Sonsoles, successful innovation rarely comes from a single individual. The best results often emerge when people with different perspectives and expertise work together to tackle complex challenges.
“The most rewarding moments are often when people from different disciplines come together to find a way forward on a complex challenge. That's usually when new ideas emerge and where real innovation happens.”
Electricity should feel effortless
Working for a large energy company brings a particular sense of responsibility. Most people expect electricity to be available without thinking about the complex system behind it.
“People take electricity almost for granted, like gravity. They plug in their phones or charge their cars without giving it a second thought. At Vattenfall, we give it a second and a third thought so that everything can run smoothly.”
As an avid problem-solver, she sees decarbonisation and the wider energy transition as important parts of the job. And she is proud of the way Vattenfall wants to be an active player in those changes."
“At Vattenfall, sustainability is not something we do alongside the business. It is the business. We want to help shape the transition rather than wait to see what others do. That aligns very closely with my own values.”
