What you can expect

The programme is structured to help you really get to know our business, yourself and where your career could take you. From day one, you’ll also benefit from a strong and supportive network of colleagues on the programme and beyond. After an initial welcome meeting at our headquarters in Sweden - where trainees usually get to meet our CEO – a series of team-building exercises and a site visit to a generation facility provide an introduction to your new colleagues and the business. An onboarding week with your ‘home’ department is then followed by the first of four seminar weeks, each of which is held in different locations during the year. These enable you to learn more about how we work across different cultures and countries and to see our business close-up through site visits. During the seminar weeks you’ll also work on live business issues – perhaps looking at ways to increase employee engagement on sustainability or finding a new approach to tackle a technical grid problem. Together with colleagues you’ll brainstorm ideas and come up with solutions.

In the first four months you are focused on the business area you are assigned to. Between January and April you then carry out two assignments, each of between 4-8 weeks, and you can choose where you want to go in the business with at least one assignment abroad. The assignments, with all accommodation and travel paid for, are an opportunity to broaden your experience and take a deep-dive into an area that interests you. Many trainees choose to step outside their comfort zone and work in a different expertise or business area. Each programme also features a ‘Hackathon’ week based at our R&D centre in Sweden and monthly huddle meetings where trainees can choose particular topics they want to know more about. At the final seminar week in August, we’ll make sure you have all the tools you need to continue your development and take the next step in your dream career.

20 unique International Trainee positions

Ahead of the programme starting each September, we invite applications for the 20 positions available. These change each year depending on the needs of our fast-paced and diverse business but could include roles such as Offshore Wind Design Engineers, E-Mobility Business Analysts or Digital Customer Experience Engineers. Each position will have specific requirements on academic background or experience which will be detailed in the vacancy. You apply for the position or positions which best match your skills, experience and ambition. If you’re successful you’ll be given all the support you need to thrive in the business area you’re assigned to, but will also have opportunities to explore other parts of the organisation at home and abroad.

What happens at the end of the programme

When the programme finishes in August, you’ll return to your business area on a full-time, unlimited contract – and with unlimited opportunities ahead of you! You might choose to continue in your position or explore new challenges within the company. The knowledge gained during the programme and the extensive network developed throughout the company means you’ll be ideally placed to know where your talents and interests could take you . You’ll also have the support of a mentor – usually a former trainee – to help make the transition from a trainee to an employee. Many trainees from previous years have gone on to develop rewarding careers and are now in senior positions in Vattenfall and other companies at the frontline of the energy transition.

Who are you?

  • Top of your class and with an academic degree
  • Passionate about climate-smarter living
  • Maximum of one year of work experience
  • Fluent in English, both in writing and speaking. In some positions local language skills are required.
  • Able to travel regularly
  • Must be prepared to relocate (temporarily) for the trainee position or for one of the assignments

  1. Apply

    First things first, find the right trainee position and write your tailored cover letter. Score extra points? Answer the question: How will you contribute to a fossil free future?

  2. Screening

    The recruiter will review your application within 2 weeks after closing the vacancy. If you are invited for the online test the recruiter will call you to explain the process and the programme.

  3. Online test

    If you invited for the online test you will receive an email with the correct instructions. Make sure you finish the test on time.

  4. Interviews

    When invited for an interview we are curious to meet you. Show us your superpowers online or in person. If we see a match a second interview might be part of the process.

  5. Assessment

    Some positions require zooming in even more on specific competences. You will be invited for an offline assessment on a pre-set date and time.

    Our Pre-employment screening varies per country. If a security vetting process is part of the screening you will be informed by the recruiter during the recruitment process.
