About Arthur Besse

Arthur has an MSc in Industrial Engineering from Paris Seine University in France
“Before joining Vattenfall I hadn’t worked in the wind sector before, but the principles of procurement and the contract mechanisms are broadly similar across the energy industry.

Finding the right suppliers for projects doesn’t mean just choosing the cheapest; our job is to the find the best-in-class suppliers who are able to deliver on their promises safely and at the right market price.

With the end of subsidies for onshore wind approaching, reducing the costs of energy production is key for onshore wind and Vattenfall. With the impact of Covid-19 it is even more important to find savings and reduce costs to compensate for lower electricity prices and demand decreased. My team’s work is important toward achieving this and ensuring Vattenfall remains competitive.

Fossil-free as part of every day life

We also try and incorporate Vattenfall’s fossil-free mission into our day-to-day work, looking for innovations and favouring suppliers who are reducing their own emissions or using recycled materials. The size of our budget means we can have a very positive influence on the supply chain.

I like the mix of working for a big company on high-profile projects but also being in an agile environment where we have to react quickly if we want to be the best and stay competitive. I also really enjoy being in an environment which operates across different cultures.

When I’m not at work you’ll often find me close to a nice glass of wine or piece of cheese which connects me with my French roots! Although I’ve chosen to live in Amsterdam I also love the mountains so try and go hiking when I get the chance.”

Career path

With the South Stream project nearing completion I was looking for something different and wanted to use my experience in a more sustainable part of the energy industry. The category I’m responsible for covers procurement for all the non-turbine aspects of onshore wind projects across Europe and the international aspect is very attractive to me.
I was seconded by EDF to work on the South-Stream offshore gas pipeline project to connect large gas reserves in Russia to southeast and central Europe. It was a very interesting experience for me to support this unique project from a technological standpoint as well as from a cultural perspective, as it involved more than 30 nationalities.
I started my career in the energy sector at EDF where I was responsible for procurement for construction contracts for a coal-fired plant in Poland.
