About Rebeka Gron

Rebeka joined Vattenfall as a marketing trainee in 2008 and studied marketing on a distance learning course. She also has qualifications including as a Certified Tester and Professional Scrum Master I.

“I began as a trainee in the customer service department after joining Vattenfall from school, but have since moved into more IT-focused roles as it was an area I found really interesting.

Although it is quite a different expertise, my earlier experience in marketing is valuable as the projects I work on now are all around understanding what customers want and making their experience of our apps better.

Being part of the Customer Service Online team for more than four years has given me a lot of insight into the benefits of the scrum way of working. It enables us to develop services and products for customers much faster than before. We’ve recently completed a major project to shift the app used by our German customers into the cloud which will enable us to be more agile to introduce improvements in the future.

Getting the best out of a team

I’m fascinated by how to get the best out of a team of people based in different locations and from different cultural backgrounds, so when the opportunity came up to be Scrum Master at Vattenfall IT it really appealed to me. Outside of work I’ve trained as a mediator so the soft skills and psychology you learn as part of that are proving really useful in this role.

Taking up my current job meant moving to Poland after working in Germany for many years. It was quite a big change as different countries have different ways of working, but I was given a lot of support by my managers to make the switch as smooth as possible.

I’m still settling into life in a new city but hopefully I’ll soon be able to return to my hobby of being a swimming coach to young people. I’ve always been a keen swimmer but in recent years I have moved more into the coaching side and have gained my licence.”

Career path

Working as part of an agile scrum team for over three years gave me a lot of insight into how to get the best out of people from different cultures and working across different locations. Taking on the role as Scrum Master was an exciting opportunity for me to build on what I’d learned to help the team continue to act as a bridge between IT and the business.
After a spell working with the business services team on finance processes, I was offered the chance to build on my previous experience within the Customer Services Online team in a role as a software tester. It was a great opportunity to spread my wings and go deeper into the IT area and I was supported to study for a number of testing qualifications.
An opportunity came up to get involved in quality assurance on different applications used by customers. My role was to test applications and to develop instructions for employees on how to use them.
I started as a trainee in the customer service department and gained experience of different types of communication with customers. I also took a distance learning course in marketing which was supported by Vattenfall.
