About Yunji Schuster

Yunji Schuster graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration and a Bachelor of Arts from the EWHA University in Seoul, South Korea. She also has an MBA in Finance from the Hamburg School of Business Administration. She began her career in the logistics industry before joining Vattenfall in 2014. A friend had suggested I applied for her previous role at Vattenfall as she had been promoted. She described it as a very positive working environment.

„My background had been in the logistics industry but I found there were many similarities with trading.

It is a very exciting and fast-paced environment to work in and you have to deal with huge information flows across variables such as weather, temperature and outages and make quick decisions.

Trading is a 24/7 operation so the team works shifts which suits a lot of people. If you work over a weekend for example you can take time off in the week and perhaps go shopping or to the park when it’s quieter, and you also get extra vacation days.

Role fits around childcare

Since returning from parental leave after having my daughter, my role has evolved to be focused more on operational projects, trading strategies, and potential business cases and I now mostly work normal office hours to fit in with childcare.

As a mother I find the work/life balance very good. My manager also has young children and is very understanding if I need to pick my daughter up from somewhere or if she is sick.

There is also the flexibility to work from home but my work colleagues are like a family to me so I much prefer the face-to-face interaction of being in the office.

Away from work you’ll often find me close to the sea – I love swimming and snorkeling!”

Career path

I was promoted to a more senior role which has also given me the opportunity to get involved in trading longer-term power products. There is a lot of flexibility and freedom at Vattenfall to develop your career in the way you want to.
I had originally applied for a job in logistics but I was asked if I would instead like to be a power trader. My role was to maximise the value of power generated and secure market access for assets across markets.
I had studied German literature and decided to pursue an MBA because I wanted to diversify my education in order to pursue a new career path. I met my husband during this time and settled in Germany. One semester after I started with MBA, I was offered a job at Vattenfall and was supported in finishing my course.
